Vigil for Anwar at prison ends tonight, says PKR

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has asked his supporters to move on and stop their nightly vigil at the Sungai Buloh prison, says PKR. – The Malaysian Insider pic, March 6, 2015.Tonight will be the last vigil for jailed opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to be held outside the Sungai Buloh prison, said PKR.Party vice-president Chua Tian Chiang said this was because Anwar wanted the opposition pact, Pakatan Rakyat (PR), to move beyond fighting for his freedom to other issues in the country."He appreciates our presence outside the prison and the lighting of candles as a mark of solidarity for him, it really boosts his will to fight."At the same time, he said that the obstacles are much bigger, they are beyond the boundaries of the front of the Sungai Buloh prison, and he has told us to move on," the Batu MP, better known as Tian Chua, said at a press conference today in Petaling Jaya.As such, tonight will be the last candlelight vigil held outside the prison and in its place, a new programme would be held every four nights, he said.Nightly vigils have been held since the Federal Court's February 10 decision to uphold Anwar's conviction for  sodomising is former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, and his five-year jail sentence."More importantly, we will… start a wider movement that will cover the nation," Tian Chua said.Tian Chua who is Batu MP also said veteran reformists from 1998 would attend tomorrow’s #KitaLawan rally. He said the participation of these veteran reformists was not only to rekindle the  fighting spirit of the Reformasi movement, but to also share their experiences in 16 years of struggle."We give a full commitment to attend the rally on March 7 and since last night we have been calling our old partners to join us in the demonstration."They could also share with the younger generation their 16 years of experience in their struggle to fight for the right to assemble."They (the youths) are our front line, so we hope that there will be cooperation between these two generations," he said.He also said the veteran reformist would hold another protest at a later date, but did not say when."We want to give our commitment as payback for the 1998 spirit of reformasi when the rakyat started developing an awareness of the need to fight for their rights, and to ensure that reforms like peaceful assemblies, detention without trial, freedom of speech on social media are defended," he said. – March 6, 2015.
