Penang has no intention of closing down Line Clear, says Guan Eng

The famous Line Clear nasi kandar restaurant in Jalan Penang, George Town, is embroiled in a family spat over whose turn it is to run the business. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, February 4, 2015.The Penang government has assured once again that the famous Line Clear nasi kandar restaurant in Jalan Penang, George Town, will not be shut down.Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said state authorities have no intention to close the popular outlet and are abiding by Penang High Court's order recently granted to the current operator, Abdul Hamid Seeni Pakeer, who managed to obtain a stay of execution against the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) last Friday. The operator, who has no valid licence, is seeking a judicial review at the Penang High Court against the MPPP's decision to act against him.Lim said the state authorities would respect the court order and wait to see how the issue could be settled amicably."But we assure you that we have no intention to shut down the outlet, which is part of Penang's food heritage," he said in a press conference at his Komtar office today.Lim was addressing the Line Clear issue because of rumours that his administration was targeting Muslim traders. He said the Line Clear issue was never a racial matter."Let's not politicise this issue. It is a licensing matter involving people in a family."We in the state also want this to be resolved amicably. If it needs to be settled in court, then we wait and respect the court's decision," he said.Hamid is in a public spat with his three cousins over who should run the business, which has a long history of rotation agreements that may now be under contention. In November last year, his lawyer Md Yusuf Idris wrote to MPPP that Hamid would agree to the rotation if all four of them and 12 others, who have legal claims in the business, share the profits from the outlet.About two weeks ago, MPPP enforcement cleared the public alley the restaurant had occupied for more than 60 years, in a 4am operation. The council said the enforcement action was conducted as Hamid was running the business without a licence from the MPPP for 2015. – February 4, 2015.
